Join FTA

The benefits of joining the FTA and details of the various levels are included in the preceding page. Membership is considered on a full or affiliate basis as detailed on the ‘Agent’ page.

Before proceeding further you should read the Rules for Membership and Professional Conduct which can be downloaded (Small Print) (Large Print). You can then decide on the most appropriate level for your application.

Student
This is the 'entry level' and is open to all who are involved in the tax profession - whether in practice or employment with large companies or HM Revenue & Customs.

A Student Application can be downloaded and when completed sent to the administration offices of the FTA together with a CV (or Resume of Experience) and a cheque payable to FTA for £60. This is the fee for 12 months membership and includes a joining administration fee (payable once only) of £15.

Associate
Applications for full Associate Membership will normally be accepted on request following success as a Student at the FTA exam. The required form will be issued when advising the success in the exam and there is an upgrade fee of £25 payable. Most Students when upgrading will want to adopt the BPP Update Course which provides the required number of CPD points to renew full membership.

APLE exemption from the exams may be granted in exceptional circumstances under the FTA's standards for Accredited Prior Learning and Experience the fee for which is £250 and this includes the first year’s full membership. This fee is not refundable after the FTA examiners have commenced their enquiries and applicants intending to adopt this route for membership should carefully prepare their portfolio in accordance with the instructions. An application can be downloaded to accompany the portfolio.

Applicants who have successfully passed relevant exams with other organisations (see Exam Exemption details) can apply for exemption from the exam and should carefully read the instructions before submitting an application. This should be submitted with a CV (or Resume of Experience), copies of exam certificate(s) and a cheque payable to FTA for £85. This is the fee for 12 months membership and includes a joining administration/exemption fee (payable once only) of £25.

Fellow
Associates may apply for upgrading to Fellow status on completion of at least three years in practice and will be subject to additional referencing and interviewing by the FTA. The Upgrade Application is available on download from the website and this should be completed and returned to the address below together with a cheque for payable to FTA for £25.

Academic
Applications are welcomed from those in acedemia who have an interest (and likely teaching involvement) in tax subjects. The benefits are restricted by virtue of not using the nomenclatures and the requirement to comply with the Code of Conduct.

An Academic Application is available and this should be completed and forwarded together with a cheque for £30. This is the fee for 12 months Affiliate Membership and includes a joining administration fee (payable once only) of £5.
