Routes to membership
New membership basis from 26th June 2006:
Applications for membership received after 26th June 2006 are considered on the following basis:
Affiliate
This is the 'entry level' and is open to all who are involved in the tax industry - whether in practice or employment with small or large companies or HM Revenue & Customs.
Associate
Applicants for full Associate Membership will need to satisfy the FTA that they have achieved a satisfactory level of knowledge. This is achieved by passing the FTA examinations, the first of which will be held in March 2007. Exemption from the exams may be granted in exceptional circumstances under the FTA's standards for Accredited Prior Learning.
Fellow
Associates may apply for upgrading to Fellow status on completion of at least three years in practice and will be subject to additional referencing and interviewing by the FTA.
Examination syllabus
A copy of the syllabus is available in the Students area of the website. The exams are arranged for sittings in March and September each year and the study manual including pilot papers is available in October each year and based on the then current year's Finance Act.
New Member Benefits
In addition to the current benefits, the FTA issues a 'Client Newsletter' at least three times a year for members to send on to their clients. This contains topical information to generate enquiries from clients for FTA members.
The FTA website is major benefit for members and is undergoing a continual programme of development. The site is promoted to the public to generate enquiries for FTA practicing members.
A monitored Members Forum on the website allows debate and a confidential exchange of information and advice between FTA members.
The FTA is always looking to introduce additional benefits for members. Forthcoming plans include a Technical Support facility as well as discounted products and services.
